Childhood MattersChildhood Matters: Helping Preteens Develop a Healthy Body Image - June 29, 2008

Early adolescence is a time when young people's bodies start to change. There is a great deal of pressure from the media and peers to be thin or look sexy. Sometimes preteens act out insecurities about their bodies in the form of cutting or eating disorders, or they might experience depression or anxiety. As a child's body begins to develop, it's important to encourage their self-esteem, confidence, and a positive body image. Join Rona and guest, Dr. Joan Valente, an Assistant Professor at University of California, San Francisco with a joint appointment in the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry, and Dr. Seth Ammerman, medical director of the Mobile Adolescent Health Services "Teen Van," as they offer ideas on how preteens develop a healthy view of themselves, and recognize when help is needed.
